The increasingly creative composer, guitarist, arranger and bandleader igOr OGOGO is premiering his latest recording Vodka Cocktail, the first episode from his Film Cues series on III Records. Proper to the elevated principles set by composer, Vodka Cocktail evolves the impression of far-reaching Russian art; though OGOGO supplies all three innovative compositions. The music was recorded at Peacock Studio in Los Angeles.
"Andrei Tarkovsky became the motivation for the development of this album," says OGOGO. "It was Tarkovsky who'd once said ‘No "mise en scéne" has the right to be repeated, just as no two personalities are ever the same. As soon as a "mise en scéne" turns into a sign, a cliché, a concept (however original it may be), then the whole thing - characters, situation, psychology - become schematic and false.’"
"The concept behind this compositions was to bond the 'OGOGO' idiom I have been working on over the last thirteen years with an unreal hallucination of Russian Avant-Garde music—the melting pot of Igor Stravinsky, Sofia Gubaidulina, Alfred Schnittke and Edison Denisov," says OGOGO.
OGOGO permitted the compositions to be deeply influenced by the tunes he grew up with. The extreme idea for such an approach was an improvisation in itself. III Records strongly encouraged OGOGO to center solely on innovative material for his Vodka Cocktail venture.
The energy of such a course can evidently be observed in the recordings documented on Vodka Cocktail. It's simple to imagine the mad composer frantically recording the OGOGO in the studio. The dense, intertwining guitar lines on "Handel" are contrasted by a subtle arrangement that couples an ideal blend of elegance and grind. Someone might correctly sense that OGOGO grew up with Russian Avant-Garde scene in his hometown by the burning psychedelics and guitar madness of "Vodka Cocktail." It's exactly this type of furious and courageous inventiveness that identifies Vodka Cocktail on all tracks.
Igor OGOGO Grigoriev went into 2010 with the energy that's been accumulating for a while now. In 2007 OGOGO released an album Solo View that received a Los Angeles Music Award nomination for the song Bach. Despite his work as a composer, OGOGO is also in continuous demand by other musicians. He recorded guitar tracks to studio albums of Rod Oakes. OGOGO also kept a steady concert schedule, appearing regularly in Los Angeles, performing in Japan and Europe. Currently with the release of Vodka Cocktail, OGOGO is back as a composer, in charge over possibly the most vibrant recording of his output.
About the OGOGO Ensembles:
Igor’s OGOGO ensembles experiment the far-distant worlds of Avant-Garde art as it shows up in unusual frameworks in a number of albums on III Records. "OGOGO Live" (1999) delves into the West Coast sound, encircling Chile and Japan. "Ira & Igor" (2002) finds OGOGO in a teamwork with the great Ira Schulman. The most current edition, "Lunar Surphase" (2009) explores the brainwave of brass players such as Andrei Solovyov and Rod Oakes. Critics have praised that album as a superb pleasure trip into "the craziest music of the world. And among the most difficult.” (Marco Carcasi)
