New Memoir Explores Psychic and Cultural Landscape: Trinidadian Author Details Life Changes in a Courageous Coming of Age Story

“The Maturity of Changes” is a coming of age story about the author’s experiences as a new father, his childhood and his romantic relationships. His story ranges from the innocence of his childhood in Trinidad to the craziness of his sexual relationships and self sabotage as an adult in New York City.
K. Lyrics seized the opportunity to write his memoir during his spare time as a graduate student in psychology. He always had aspirations of becoming a published author and through his own work in psychology, was inspired to think more intuitively about his past life experiences.
While writing his dissertation proposal, he did extensive reading on the topic of Black Masculinity and mental health. His academic reading became the basis for his own writing endeavors. Further, while working on his studies, his daughter was born and he was met with the mixed emotions associated with being a new father.
He started writing his memoir in August 2008 while volunteering as a psychology student at a prison in New York City. His experience at the prison was yet another source of inspiration for his book. While at the prison, he began to think more analytically about the experience of incarceration and anti-social behavior.
Given his lack of background in creative writing, K. Lyrics enrolled in a memoir writing workshop in February 2009 to craft the vision for his book. He eventually self-published the final draft in October 2009 with the help of Lulu.com. The author’s writing style is both courageous and informal and he uses extremely graphic language in the depiction of true events. K. Lyrics describes a life journey filled with ironic twists and parallel experiences. Further, this memoir adds to the ongoing dialogue surrounding gender, sex and culture while presenting an inspirational statement for those who may be seeking redemption within their lives.
