South Carolina Author Sam Morton Nominated for National Book Awards

Columbia, SC, February 24, 2010 --(PR.com)-- South Carolina Author Sam Morton Nominated for Two National Literary Awards.

Morton Will Appear at South Carolina Book Festival.

Columbia South Carolina author Sam Morton was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award presented by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. and the Newbery Medal presented for excellence in children’s literature. The nominations are for his novel, Betrayed: From the Austin Files (Quake Publishing, 2009). Karen Syed, founder and CEO of Echelon Press, nominated Morton for the awards.

“Sam is an excellent writer. Disavowed, his first novel, which is a police thriller, is suspenseful and adventurous. His blogs, especially the ones about his kids, are hilarious. But I really believe he’s found his voice in the young adult market. Betrayed and Death Match, an electronic-download novella we published at Quake, really speak to a young audience. They have a youthful vibe without underestimating the maturity of his audience, but at the same time, he addresses some pretty universal and sometimes controversial topics. That’s why I nominated him for the awards and that’s why I believe he deserves to win,” Syed said.

“Although the Newbery Medal has already been awarded, I’m honored Karen nominated me for both. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on PEN/Faulkner. I’m humbled that she has that kind of confidence in my writing, especially given the tremendous house of novelists within the ranks of Echelon Press,” Morton said. The Newbery Medal was presented in February to Rebecca Stead, author of When You Reach Me.

Betrayed features Austin Pierce, whose father is a political consultant and whose best friend, Rico, is in the United States illegally. Together with Rico’s beautiful, tough-as-nails cousin, Veronica, the boys face off against a U.S. Senator with his own agenda and a rogue Mexican general who makes people trying to cross the border disappear. When Austin discovers Veronica helps people illegally cross the border from Mexico, he faces a decision: should he help his friends or try to stop the general? Either path could lead to danger, even death.

It’s a book for the entire family, but packed with the action and suspense that won Sam five-star reviews for Disavowed. Sam is donating 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the book to a charity.

Morton will sign copies of his books at the South Carolina Book Festival February 27-28 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, Columbia, S.C. at the Echelon Press booth.
