State Farm and GivingPoint Partner to Empower Youth Through Environmental and Civic Stewardship Program in Alpharetta, GA
The State Farm Youth Advisory Board (YAB) announced that GivingPoint will receive a $60,300 service-learning grant for an environmental responsibility project. GivingPoint is one of 82 community organizations to receive a service-learning, youth-led grant across the United States and Canada. More than 1,100 grant requests were received by the Board.
Alpharetta, GA, February 24, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Teens from Alpharetta High School and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta will have the opportunity to design and build a garden that will benefit the entire community. With this funding, the State Farm Youth Advisory Board is providing teens with the resources and tools they need to study the environmental hazards associated with industrial farming and the critical need for sustainable agriculture. This 10-month project will give youth more than 200 hours of meaningful service-learning opportunities.
Through GivingPoint’s program, teens can track, verify and earn points for their volunteer service on their website, www.mygivingpoint.org. They can “cash in” their points for micro grants that are donated to their favored nonprofits. All of their good deeds will be recorded in GivingPoint's database, so teens have a safe and secure place to document their giving legacy and build their civic transcripts.
“GivingPoint’s program will benefit the community by educating them on environmental responsibility,” said Katie Comer, YAB board member.
“The grant from State Farm will provide a true collaborative partnership with GivingPoint and with our diverse populations at Alpharetta High School. The Career Based Instruction (CBI) students at Alpharetta High School will have an incredible opportunity to learn and to support other curriculums at our school. Because of the CBI students’ efforts, the Culinary Arts students will have fresh herbs and vegetables for their cooking. Most importantly, the culinary art students will have the ability to develop relationships and serve as models for the CBI students,” says Mary Anne Charron, Principal at Alpharetta High School.
“GivingPoint is excited to partner with State Farm to bring neighbors together and empower youth to create a generation of caring, passionate civic philanthropists,” says Ansley Jones Colby, CEO of GivingPoint.
“State Farm supports service-learning because it combines service to the community with classroom curriculum in a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic responsibility,” said Renate Dugans, Public Affairs Specialist. “The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is a prime example of State Farm’s commitment to education, our community and our youth.”
The community garden will stimulate social interaction, encourage diversity understanding, beautify the land and produce nutritious foods, while fostering environmental responsibility and sustainable agriculture. Students from Alpharetta High School produced a video to describe the need for the grant. The video can be viewed at http://vimeo.com/6844088.
A check presentation will be held on Friday, February 26, 2010, 2:00 pm, Alpharetta High School, Media Center, 3595 Webb Bridge Road, Alpharetta, GA 30005, Tel: (770) 521-7640
