Marlborough, MA Downtown Meeting Successfully Brings Diverse Group Together to Discuss Downtown Issues

Meeting results in the proposed formation of 3 groups to undertake downtown projects.

Marlborough, MA, March 06, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) hosted a downtown Meeting on March 2 which saw important city figures including Mayor Stevens and Chief of Police Mark Leonard, downtown business owners and interested citizens gathering to discuss and tackle key downtown issues. The meeting was held at Main Street Café in Downtown Marlborough thanks to restaurant owners Randy and Mary Scott who opened the café after hours for this meeting. Their establishment has been a landmark on Main Street for over 25 year. MEDC’s Executive Director, Marilyn Whalley, addressed the gathering of over 40 with a presentation on the issues facing downtown and reviewed the MEDC’s short and long-term solutions. The presentation was followed by a group discussion about what small, low-budget steps can be taken to see tangible results quickly.

The end result of this successful meeting was the proposed creation of three groups: a downtown logo/ marketing group, a landscaping/streetscape group and the formation of a Downtown Association. MEDC will facilitate meetings for each of the groups to start moving forward on small projects.

The logo/marketing group will look into “branding” downtown Marlborough. Branding the downtown will involve creating a “vision” of what downtown Marlborough should look like in the future, the creation of a logo that is unique to downtown Marlborough, choosing colors and themes to be reflected (along with the logo) throughout the downtown area and in marketing materials and looking into a downtown website that links to the websites of the City, MEDC and the Chamber of Commerce.

The landscape/streetscape group will work with Commissioner Ron Lefreniere and the Department of Public Works in coming up with solutions for crosswalk designs, landscaping, plans for improving the pathways from the free municipal parking and Washington Street stairway access to Main Street as well as discussing improvements in signage directing towards and within downtown Marlborough.

Finally, there was interest expressed in creating a Downtown Association that will bring together business owners and interested parties to work together on long-term downtown goals. City Planner, Nancy Savoie, pointed out that organizations such as this can be leveraged later on to obtain grants for downtown and are a good idea.
