Dubai, United Arab Emirates, March 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Katrina Legarda, a prominent Philippine-based lawyer known for her strong advocacy on women's rights, has confirmed her attendance to the upcoming Women of Substance 2010, an annual gathering under the patronage of the Embassy of the Philippines in the UAE, honoring Filipina achievers in the Gulf. The Dubai-based Filipino lifestyle publication Illustrado Magazine announced that Legarda will be the special guest speaker at the event happening on March 27th at the Godolphin Ballroom in Jumeirah Emirates Towers.
Celebrated for her capacity to support women and provide great aspiration out of her many achievements, Katrina Legarda was a recipient of the Soroptomist International awards' “Woman Helping Women” and “Woman Advancing the Status of Women”, and was featured as one of the Leaders of the Millennium in the 2000 Philippine Year Book. She has also handled some high profile litigation in the Philippines particularly relevant to her advocacy on women and children, and was instrumental in the recognition of the “Battered Woman Syndrome” by the Philippine Supreme Court as a defense in a parricide charge, as well as the formulation of the law on Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children.
Katrina Legarda is now with the Child Protection Network Philippines assisting children through the legal system and is the President of the University of the Philippines’ Women Lawyers’ Circle. Under the auspices of the UNICEF, PLAN International, the British Embassy (Manila) and UNIFEM, she trains judges, prosecutors, social workers, medical and police personnel around the Philippines, as as well as in Vientiane, Laos, Goa and Chennai, India, and Lahore, Pakistan, on the investigation of crimes involving women and children.
According to Lalaine Chu-Benitez, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Illustrado, “It is an enormous privilege to have Katrina Legarda in attendance at our Women of Substance event. We appreciate her taking time from her busy schedule to be part of our campaign. We believe that she will be able to provide practical legal knowledge as well as serve as an inspiration to our compatriots in the Gulf. Her presence certainly supports our aim to contribute to the empowerment of Filipinas in the region.”
During her special speaking engagement at the Women of Substance event, Katrina Legarda will talk about the protection of women and family law. She explained, “I have noticed that when Filipino expatriates come home, the first thing they do is seek legal advice to get their family problems sorted out. So, I will ensure that I provide them information about these.”
Commenting on the Filipina's capacity to improve their standing and future in the international arena, this law professor and television host of a legal segment at ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda said: “Keep an open mind and keep learning. Hold your heads up high. Know that there is dignity in labour. And, please, do not let money be your god: walk away from abusive, demeaning, and oppressive situations.”
She then concluded her initial message to all Filipinas in the region, “Be strong. To re-quote Eleanor Roosevelt: No-one can make you feel inferior unless you allow it. Treat yourself as an equal to the man. Be proactive, not reactive, to problems back home. Most problems have solutions, including, moving on.”
Illustrado's Women of Substance 2010, in conjunction with International Women’s Day, is now on its third consecutive year. The elegant coffee-afternoon event traditionally highlighted by a talk-show will also feature the premiere of a mini-documentary, a make-over runway show highlighting real Filipina beauty, and a photo exhibit. The event is sponsored by Dove – Unilever, Liali Jewellery, Marie France and Nanay Tuneng.
