The float and Ella’s charms both begin to carry him away from the indignities of the depression, and the two of them together become absorbed in the contemporary struggle for labor union rights and political change.

Ella’s violent and dysfunctional family, however, have created in her a manipulative sociopath, and Kurt and Ella’s journey of love and ambitious dreams leads finally to the moment when they must face the consequences of their own unfortunate past decisions. They may be torn apart by that process and the aftershock of it could reverberate down through the generations to come.
