Scholarship Dedicated to California State University Dominguez Hills Student Adrian Rodriguez
Carson, CA, March 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Rancho Dominguez Alumni Association (RDAA) announced that it will dedicate a scholarship to former California State University student Adrian Rodriguez. Adrian was born and raised in Artesia, California. His parents emigrated from Mexico. His father (Ezekial Rodriguez) was born and raised in La Piedad, Michoacán and his mother (Adela Rodriguez) was born in Culiacan, Sinaloa. The family always stressed the importance of education. Adrian understood that a college education was the key to success in the United States.
Adrian attended Benito Juarez Elementary School in Cerritos, Faye Ross Junior High in Artesia, and Richard Gahr High School in Cerritos (Class of 1995). At elementary school he learned how to play the saxophone and was active in the school band. He enjoyed playing sports and for most of his childhood played little league baseball at Artesia Park, and went on to play high school baseball and football at Gahr.
After graduating from high school, Adrian attended Cerritos College and graduated with his Associates Degree. In Spring 2001 Adrian entered California State University, Dominguez Hills. He majored in English and pledged Sigma Pi Fraternity.
As an active member of Sigma Pi Fraternity, Adrian hit the ground running. He pledged the fraternity in the fall semester of 2001, and in one short year he became Sage (President) of the fraternity. During his tenure as Sage, he showed his leadership capabilities by being a fair and impartial Sage. The following year, Adrian represented his university at Sigma Pi’s biennial Convocation (conference) in Philadelphia, PA. During the following spring semester, he was awarded the scholarship which has been named in his honor and attended the Mid-year Leadership Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
Aside from attending Sigma Pi functions around the United States, he also worked to improve CSUDH campus life. Adrian attended most campus functions representing the fraternity. Through his great communication and leadership skills, he continued creating bridges between student organizations, faculty/staff and Sigma Pi. One of Adrian’s passions was promoting his fraternity’s brotherhood. He took this action to heart and he continued as an alumnus.
As a Sigma Pi alumnus, Adrian opened up his home many times to current students for various events. Anytime he had an opportunity to speak with active brothers, he would give them advice and encouragement to continue the work of a Sigma Pi brother.
Adrian led a passionate life. He loved many things: music, traveling, jiu-jitsu, softball, gardening, friends and his family. He was funny, charismatic, bright, kind, and loving. He is greatly missed by his family and friends and we hope this scholarship in his honor will provide Sigma Pi brothers an opportunity to participate in Mid-year leadership workshops, Sigma Pi University and Convocation. Adrian Rodriguez passed away on August 3, 2009 from a lung infection. He is survived by his sister and Mother.
Former Fraternity Chapter Director Walter Lopez reflected the dedication of the scholarship. “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our fraternity brother Adrian Rodriguez. But with this scholarship, we hope to keep his memory alive through the education of others.”
CSUDH alumnus David Parikh noted that “this scholarship can be used to pay for any educational expenses—books, room and board, conferences, or leadership school. We hope to award the scholarship every year. It will mean a lot to the student who wins; and it is a great way to honor Adrian Rodriguez. Anyone who ever met him knew he was special.”
The Scholarship, formerly known as the Rancho Dominguez Alumni Scholarship, was established in 2000. It is administered by the Rancho Dominguez Alumni Association. The alumni association was founded 1994 by members of Sigma Pi Fraternity who attended California State University Dominguez Hills. The association also administers the Robert Hashimoto Memorial Scholarship. For more information about these scholarships or the alumni association see their website dhalumni . org.
