Mr. Zakin joined Newmark Knight Frank as senior managing director of the firm's Capital Group in 2003. Mr. Zakin possesses more than 25 years of experience in real estate investment banking, real estate workouts and financial services. His principal responsibilities at Newmark Knight Frank are centered on investment sale and buyer representation transactions (Property and Note Sales), corporate sale-leasebacks and equity and debt financing, as well as IRC §1031 Like-Kind Exchange transactions. In addition, Mr. Zakin regularly provides advisory services to domestic and international clients of Newmark Knight Frank in connection with ownership, valuation, acquisition, disposition and restructuring transactions.
Mr. Zakin has a diverse industry background, which includes tenures with Insignia/ESG (1997-2003) and Lehman Brothers (1985-1997). He has completed more than $3.0 billion in transactions at Newmark to date and previously with Insignia/ESG. In addition, Mr. Zakin has executed over $750 million of transactions throughout the United States on behalf of clients requiring IRC §1031 Like-Kind Exchanges. Such transactions have included the acquisition and financing of properties net leased to tenants such as Bed Bath & Beyond, CVS, Dicks Sporting Goods, Eckerd, Food 4 Less, Home Depot, Petco, Starbucks, RBC Centura Bank, Robb & Stuckey, Ross Dress for Less, Walgreens and WalMart.
During his career at Lehman Brothers, Mr. Zakin served as senior vice president in the Capital Preservation and Restructuring Group and was responsible for the sale, refinancing and restructuring of commercial properties throughout the United States, representing approximately $1 billion in investor equity. Some of the most notable transactions included the restructuring and sale of Amfac Center in Honolulu and the restructuring, re-branding and sale of the Grand Hyatt San Francisco hotel. He was instrumental in the formation of Lexington Realty Trust (NYSE) and served as a director. He was also involved in the creation of the commercial real estate finance and securitization program at Lehman and participated in various advisory assignments for investment banking clients.
Mr. Zakin has practiced as an attorney in New York City specializing in the financing, acquisition, disposition and restructuring of real estate transactions. Mr. Zakin is licensed as a real estate broker in the state of New York and the state of Florida. He is a member of the Bar of the State of New York, the Real Estate Board of New York and the Executive Committee of the New York District Council of the Urban Land Institute. He has been a guest speaker at events sponsored by the American Real Estate Society, Commercial Property World, National Real Estate Investors magazine and Real Share Net Lease as well as a lecturer on Commercial Real Estate at The Learning Annex in New York City. Mr. Zakin is a graduate of Syracuse University and St. John's University School of Law.
