WGIRLS NYC, a registered 501(c)(3), announced it will be holding its first annual OPERATION PROM event on April 17, 2010 to offer underprivileged New York City high school girls the opportunity to “shop” like a princess for their highly anticipated senior proms. OPERATION PROM was created to provide underprivileged girls with dresses and accompanying accessories so that they are not forced to miss out on the biggest social event of high school. The OPERATION PROM event will occur in tandem with Operation Fairy Dust to help outfit thousands of young women with donated gently used formal gowns, cosmetics, and accessories to ensure they are able to have a memorable and special experience.
“For many teen girls, a harsh reality of high school hits home when the expense of prom comes up,” says Amy Heller, President and Founder of WGIRLS NYC. “Our ‘Prom Squad’ will help create Cinderella stories for thousands of area girls who would not otherwise be able to attend this important and magical event. We are excited to pilot OPERATION PROM in NYC, and hope to expand nationally by utilizing the WGIRLS strengths in operational execution and fundraising, a large membership, and a growing national presence.”
The 2010 OPERATION PROM event will be held at Brooklyn Borough Hall Building on Saturday, April, 17th. All of the donated items will help to transform the oldest public building in Brooklyn, into a prom mecca full of dresses, cosmetics, and accessories. Dresses will be displayed in a simulated boutique setting to create the perfect shopping environment. Representatives from The Garment Care Group will also be present to provide free alterations as necessary. Participants are invited from high schools across NYC.
To Donate:
All donations are graciously appreciated; however, gowns that are over 10 years old are generally not utilized. All five Garment Care Group locations will be accepting gently worn dresses until April 15th. Please visit www.wgirls.org for the drop-off locations and mailing addresses of the Garment Care Group. Prior to the event all collected dresses are cleaned and steamed at the production facility at no charge, so that dresses look better than new at their “second dance.”
