Genscape Announces Major Expansion of Wind and Hydro Generation in WECC
Tehachapi Pass wind farm and over 17,000 MW of hydro capacity are added to Power RT.
Louisville, KY, April 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Genscape, the leading global provider of energy information for commodity and financial markets, today announced a major expansion of its Power RT service with the addition of fourteen of the largest renewable power plants in the Western US.
Power RT is the industry’s essential source for real-time power generation data, using proprietary monitoring technologies and algorithms to provide traders and operators unrivaled visibility on the status and output of over 350 of the largest power plants in North America.
Wind has been one of the largest sources of new generation in the country over the last few years, and is of particular interest to traders due to its impact on congestion and market volatility. Tehachapi Pass wind farm, located in Southern California, is one of the largest wind farms in the world, consisting of over 5,000 turbines with a current capacity of 835 MW. Genscape’s Power RT is the industry’s only source for real-time wind generation data, covering 15 of the largest wind farms in the country totaling nearly 10,000 MW of generating capacity.
Hydro power is a critical piece of the puzzle for market participants in WECC. Genscape’s Power RT service has added 13 hydro plants in the Northwest totaling over 17 GW of capacity including Priest Rapids, The Dalles, Wanapum and Rocky Reach. Generation from these plants is estimated using highly accurate algorithms developed by Genscape’s Market Intelligence group, who also provide clients with a Northwest Hydro Generation Forecasting Service.
“This expansion in West coverage is in response to our customers,” said Mike McAuliffe, Genscape’s VP of Global Sales. “PowerRT provides good coverage of coal, gas and nuclear plants, but wind and hydro were not as well covered. This goes a long way towards fixing that.”
