Slimm Buick, Santa Cruz Artist, to Appear at 2nd Sunday Art Show at the Windmill Cafe
Santa Cruz, CA, April 04, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Slimm Buick, Santa Cruz artist and entertainer, will show his Art Bikes, Watercolors and more at the Windmill Cafe (21231 E Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, CA) "Second Sunday Artists & Crafters Show", Sunday Apr. 11 from approximately 1pm to 6pm (following the East Cliff Farmers Market). He will also be spinning vintage vinyl records (45's & 78's); mostly American blues, western swing, and R&B from the 1960's and prior. The event is for all ages, and is free.
Slimm Buick has been creating art in one form or another since childhood. And, he's kept that childlike style and intent. Kids just love him! Animals, too. Slimm was born & raised in San Francisco, as were his Father, Richard Perkins (a retired Cable Car Gripman) and Grandfather, Robert Perkins, a Grocer. Actually, for the record, Slimm is a 4th generation San Franciscan, a 5th generation California citizen according to the National Genealogy library in Salt Lake City. And, it shows in his work and alternative lifestyle (he does not drive or own a car, amongst other oddities).
All this might explain why Slimm's work often has a definite "Western" flair. Remember; San Francisco is a part of the Gold Country or "Mother Lode" in CA and that group is about as wild and wooly as they come! His watercolor series, entitled Cowboys & Aliens, will be on display and for sale, as will prints, postcards, T-Shirts and magnets. He will also be showing tooled leather works, such as jewelry boxes, instruments and instrument cases.
Slimm's art have been shown in major museums, featured in major movies such as Rent (Sony 2008), and sold in galleries around the Bay Area. He is best known for movable works of art, or "Art Bikes". These bicycles look like they could be from the Wild West, or another world, altogether and have been seen in movies, books and documentaries.
His best known piece, "Rawhide" is also his favored form of transportation, and the one he can often be seen riding around town, on. That and the Cycle Truck, for chores. It has a large, 1948 chrome Buick automobile grill on the front "to deter jaywalkers," he jokes! Most of these bikes can be seen in the Discovery Channel episode of Weird Wheels which featured him in a segment for the popular television series.
Slimm also leads monthly Art Bike Rides from Midtown Santa Cruz (901 Soquel Ave. x Branciforte 95062) and later meets up with other artists, cyclists and more at the Santa Cruz Art League, the Bike Church and Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History to name a few.
