Segway Polo in the Plaza Starts Saturday, April 10, in Raleigh's City Plaza
Triangle Segway brings Segway Polo to downtown Raleigh’s new City Plaza. Game fundamentals and practice scrimmages will be the focus of the event series. The Raleigh Segway Polo team will be the first in the city and in the state of North Carolina.
Raleigh, NC, April 07, 2010 --(PR.com)-- On Saturday, April 10, Triangle Segway’s series of Segway Polo clinics will debut in downtown Raleigh. The events, called “Segway Polo in the Plaza,” will feature 3-on-3 instructional scrimmages on the Astroturf in the new City Plaza on Fayetteville Street.
The initial event dates are set for April 10 and April 24 at 10 AM. Clinics will thereafter be twice a month. The clinics and practice play are designed for proficient Segway riders, age 18 and older. The sessions will last two hours.
“Players will learn game fundamentals and then have the opportunity to play practice scrimmages,” says Todd Masinter, owner of Triangle Segway. “These events in City Plaza will be a springboard for forming our own Raleigh team, with actual matches played elsewhere on a larger field.”
Segway Polo is played similarly to its horse polo namesake, except players ride on Segways and use a padded polo mallet and a Nerf ball. The game dates to 2003, when an exhibition match was played during the halftime of a Minnesota Vikings/San Francisco 49ers football game. Since that time, Segway Polo has received widespread attention in the media, and interest has grown worldwide.
Teams hail from the U.S., Barbados, Germany, New Zealand, among others. The International Segway Polo Association (ISPA) has official rules for the sport, and the ISPA also hosts an annual championship tournament called the Woz Challenge Cup, named after the gameʼs most famous polo player, Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak. The 2009 championship was played in Cologne, Germany.
“Segway Polo is a fast-paced game that’s exciting to play and to watch,” says Masinter. “Come join us on Saturday for the fun.”
Prospective players who can demonstrate proficiency on a Segway should contact Triangle Segway at 919-828-1988 or info@trianglesegway.com in advance of the event dates for information about signing up.
