A & D Professional Pest Elimination Goes Green
A & D Professional Pest Elimination is proud to announce that they are Green-Pro certified and Rhode Island's only pest management firm that holds this certification.
Pawtucket, RI, April 08, 2010 --(PR.com)-- It's not easy being green in certain professions, and you might think pest elimination is among them.
But one local business is part of a growing movement of companies taking an eco-friendly approach to eliminating bugs and rodents. Gone are the days when pesticides were the only method of treating a pest problem. This new breed of professionals is taking on more of a "pest detective" role — finding out how and why bugs or rodents are infiltrating a home or business, rather than just trying to treat or eliminate the population.
Anthony Tudino is owner of A & D Professional Pest Elimination, which recently earned the National Pest Management Association's GreenPro certified eco-effective status. His is currently the only Rhode Island business with this certification.
Companies with GreenPro certification set out to investigate and find the source of the problem — and rectify it — before applying pesticides.
"Being green means you are really trying to figure out why insects and rodents are getting in without just going in and applying pesticides for a first way to treat," he said. "It's a lot more work, but it's more satisfying because you know that what you've done is going to last a lot longer."
"It's definitely the way the industry is going," he added.
"Over the course of the last few years we've seen a lot of people tell us right out, 'I don't want pesticides in my home,'" he said.
For example, his company has been called to deal with bedbugs for clients who require oxygen, and don't want pesticides in the room.
"So we will go in there and use steam to treat," he said. "You encase the mattresses and box springs in a bed bug casement and just use steam, and it kills them.
"It's more work, but it's definitely more green. "
For a mouse problem, Tudino's team would investigate how they enter. Instead of laying out poison, they would set out traps, which is not only more eco-friendly, but also smarter in terms of pinpointing any entry points.
Educating the home or business owner is key. "That's a big part of being green is educating people on what you can and should do as a (home or business owner) to not have this problem," he said.
One might think that by eliminating the root of the problem — a pest elimination service is in effect eliminating future business. But not so.
"It would be like buying a car," Tudino said. For example — if you got a raw deal from one dealership, but good service from another, you'd more than likely return to the dealer you trusted and recommend that business to friends. "A lot of companies look at it like repeat business (if the bugs or rodents return) but we look at it that if they are happy with us, they'll refer us," he said. "And our business has always grown."
