SIIA Announces Its Self-Insured Employer Health Care Track at the SIIA 30th Annual Educational Conference & Expo

Simpsonville, SC, April 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- A collection of successful self-insured health plans are slated to be showcased during the upcoming SIIA National Conference & Expo, scheduled for October 12-14, 2010 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Tower. The Health Care Educational Track also includes big name industry speakers and timely topics of interest to employers, TPAs and stop-loss insurance carriers.

Employer session highlights include:
Bob Ihrie, senior vice president, employee rewards & benefits for Lowes Companies, Inc. describes how his company "went shopping" to find the best provider for heart surgery and related cardiovascular services and concluded one of the country's top centers of excellence was the best choice for both quality and cost considerations.

A panel of self-insured employer representatives that have incorporated work-site health care services will share their experience on how this approach has affected utilization and overall plan costs.

Michael Moley, senior vice president of Human Resources with Catholic Health System, will talk about how his organization, which operates four hospitals as well as 12 primary care centers, has applied what it has learned in taking care of patients to structure an effective self-insured group health plan that has resulted in significant savings while delivering quality care based on a "patient-centered" model.

Making changes to health plan designs can be tricky, especially if such changes would directly affect the benefits and costs for plan participation. Ariann Lawhorn, human resource manager for Mid City Supply Company, Inc. will tell the story how her company successfully "sold" such changes to employees while reducing overall health plan costs 10%. This process also resulted in identifying and improving areas within the health plan that participants perceived as negative.

Demonstrating the importance of transparency, Stephanie Hearn, executive director of Butler Health Plan, describes how her company has empowered their employees with quality, price and customer experience information resulting in a reduction of self-insured health plan costs.

In a unique example of how pop culture has influenced the business world, Dr. Robert Clark from the Center for Primary Care will tell an entertaining and informative story of how that company's self-insured group health plan incorporated a "Biggest Loser" - style weight loss incentive program as part of its group health plan. The presentation will describe how participating employees have been able to improve their health status and the related effect on overall health plan costs.

While people often associate self-insured health plans with mid- and large-sized employers, the fact is that there are many smaller companies that operate successful plans. To illustrate this fact, Vicki Boroff, manager of human resources and development for Chief Super Market, Inc. will describe how her company is effectively dealing with unionized workers, catastrophic claims, "Cadillac plan" and other health care issues through its self-insured plans.

Aircraft Gear Corporation, another small self-insured employer, has successfully incorporated "value based purchasing" in the areas of coverage of payments. The company's risk manager, Jim Knutson, will tell the story.

To help self-insurance "newcomers" participate in the conference, a "Self-Insured Health Plan for Beginners" session has been scheduled on the front side of the conference.

Also new for this year, SIIA is offering a three-session "mini-track" specifically designed for health insurance brokers.

In addition to these great employer-focused sessions, SIIA is pleased to announce that the "biggest names" within the heath care self-insurance industry will be participating on the educational program.

A health care TPA CEO panel discussion will include Jay Anliker, CEO of UMR, Inc; Elliot Cooperstone, CEO of Meritain Health, and Paul Lotharius, CEO of CoreSource.

Another panel discussion will feature senior executives from the countries largest stop-loss insurance carriers, including Craig Kelbel, CEO of HCC Life Insurance Company, Inc.; Dan Lebish, CEO of HM Insurance Group, Inc.; Bill Knarr, CEO of One America/RE Moulton; Michael Fry, senior vice president with Symetra Financial, and Michael Shunney, senior vice president with Sun Life Financial Assurance Group, Inc.

Additional educational sessions will focus on the following hot topics:

Strategies TPAs can use to help employers bend the health care cost curve
An independent view of the stop-loss industry

Strategies for succeeding in an evolving self-funded market

Trends in legal claims against self-insured health plan administrator

Top 10 regulatory compliance update for self-insured employers and administrators

Rounding out the program, a special pre-conference session has been added to provide a detailed overview of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Learn how this recently-passed landmark health care legislation will affect self-insured group health plans and what your organization needs to be prepared for the new regulatory environment to come.

Of course, there is more to the SIIA National Conference than just top-notch education. The networking opportunities are unmatched and it is home to the industry's largest trade show. In short, if you are a self-insured employer or are an industry service provider, this is simply a must-attend event.
