Grand Rapids, MI, April 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Locally owned and operated Seniors Helping Seniors will be providing free informational workshops for seniors and their families. The main topics that will be covered are the benefits of staying at home and home safety. Along with these topics, local elder law attorney, Shawn Weera, will discuss how veterans benefits and other programs may help seniors pay for services that will help them remain in their home. At this free workshop, seniors and their families will learn what the Aid and Attendance program for veterans and surviving spouses is all about and also how it can pay for your home care.
“Many seniors do not want to go to a nursing home or an assisted living facility. They have been in their home for decades in many cases and this is where their memories are,” says Amanda Thrush, Director of Client Relations. One of the problems faced by many seniors is how to pay for the services they need to maintain their independence safely. These free workshops are intended to help inform the community about some of the resources that are available for seniors.
The two organizations work together to provide these informational events to the community on a regular basis. The workshop will help seniors learn what they can do to maintain a safe environment in the home, explore the benefits of remaining at home, and learn how they may be able to take advantage of options like the Aid and Attendance program to help them fully utilize services like those offered by Seniors Helping Seniors. The next event will be held on Tuesday May 25th at the Kentwood Library which is located at 4700 Kalamazoo Ave. SE. There will also be two seminars in June at senior centers in Walker (June 28th) and Sparta (June 23rd).
Lisa Piskin from the Law Offices of Shawn Weera says, “As elder care attorneys, we find honest ways to protect our clients’ homes, loved ones, values, and independence, and, in so doing, we ensure that our clients never run out of money and never run out of options.” The seminars are provided free of charge as a service to the community. Seating is limited and any senior interested in attending can call 616-234-0190 to make a reservation for the seminar.
Some of the topics that will be covered in regards to the Aid & Attendance Program are:
Service requirements and eligible periods of war
Criteria for need
Income and asset requirements
2010 Pension rates
What long term care expenses will this cover?
What can an elder law attorney do for you?
For Seniors Helping Seniors the goal is twofold: 1) Help seniors maintain their independence with the dignity and respect they deserve 2) Provide an opportunity for healthy and active seniors to not only do good and help another senior, but also supplement their own retirement income... a way to give and to receive® is one of the slogans used by Seniors Helping Seniors because they really are serving both sides of the equation. “There are so many loving, caring and compassionate seniors here in West Michigan who are retired and have all this free time on their hands. With our program these seniors are able to find work, which is very hard for them to do, and this work is so rewarding for them because they are actually helping another senior,” says co-owner Judy VanderLinde.
During the workshop Seniors Helping Seniors will discuss:
Home safety
Benefits to staying at home
What to look for when selecting a home care agency
Questions to ask to determine if home care is the right choice for you
Seniors Helping Seniors provides a variety of help including companion care, transportation to doctors and healthcare facilities, around-the-clock in-home care, basic handyman services, lawn and garden work, food shopping, cooking, cleaning, personal grooming, etc.
