About the Book
Consistently at the forefront of modern design, Zeisel has produced outstanding functional pieces throughout an artistic career spanning over 80 years. In contrast to most of the dominant designers of the era, Zeisel proudly and pointedly brought a feminine perspective to mid-century modern design.

The Shape of Life traces Zeisel’s life chronology and history as a designer and examines the comprehensive retrospective exhibition of her work held at the Erie Art Museum. The volume encompasses stunning photographs of some of her most enduring ceramics, glass and furniture designs. It includes a plate stamp chronology and critical essays, including an introduction by curator John Vanco, an overview by art writer Lance Esplund, an account of Zeisel’s work with The Orange Chicken, and a reflection on viewers’ engagement with Zeisel through the Museum’s education program.
