For St. Augustine history was the education of the human race in the stages of our own lives. By adding to that inspired insight ideas from G.W.F. Hegel and Abraham Maslow and from chaos theory -- ideas that St. Augustine himself did not live to see -- this book describes our Western history as an aging process of growing up toward an inner freedom of maturity for both nations and people.

Jackson’s book updates the views of eighteenth century historian Giovanni Battista Vico in his Scienza Nuova on how the development of peoples in history can be understood by comparing their experiences across different times. Author Jackson then provides fresh insights into the stages of growth and decline in the development of Western civilization which moved our history toward the goal of a good life and the pursuit of happiness.
