Discount Cab Set to Break National Record for Cab Trips on Earth Day
Nation’s Largest Toyota Prius Fleet Will Donate $1 from Every Cab Ride to Homeward Bound.
Glendale, AZ, April 20, 2010 --(PR.com)-- This Earth Day, Discount Cab is out to break its record for most cab trips in one day – and Valley charity Homeward Bound will be the benefactor.
The forward-thinking green cab company is experiencing record growth this year and wants to turn its success into the same thing for a worthy cause. On Earth Day, Discount Cab will donate $1 for every cab ride it makes, giving the money to Homeward Bound for an energy-efficient light bulb program.
“We want to break our record day – 10,182 dispatched trips – on Earth Day,” said Craig Hughes, CEO of Total Transit, Inc., the parent company of Discount Cab. “It only makes sense that the country’s largest Prius cab fleet helps minimize the amount of CO2 in the Valley on the day that celebrates the environment and ecology.”
Regardless of whether the record is broken or not, Homeward Bound wins. Hughes said he has already committed to donating $10,182 to the organization – to mark what he believes is a national record for single day dispatched trips.
“But if Valley residents can help us top that number,” Hughes said, “then Homeward Bound stands to benefit even more.”
This is Discount Cab’s second green initiative of 2010. The company installed $750,000 worth of solar panels at its Glendale headquarters in February and is able to save 25 percent of its electricity cost each year. The 400-panel system is one of the largest installations in the Phoenix metropolitan area and will reduce emissions by 377 tons per year, or the equivalent of 9,700 trees absorbing the CO2 gases.
“We believe that leading by example is the best way to encourage others to think about living and working in a more efficient, environmentally friendly manner,” Hughes said. “If we can set the example, maybe others will take notice.”
People are taking notice of Hughes and Discount Cab. Last fall, the company was named “Taxicab Large Fleet Operator of the Year” by the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA), a non-profit association that includes more than 1,000 members.
This spring, Hughes will be honored as one of the Valley’s 25 “Most Admired CEOs” by The Phoenix Business Journal.
Hughes and Discount Cab strive each day to find innovative ways to serve their customers. In addition to its many green initiatives, the company’s “Free Ride Back” program keeps inebriated drivers off the streets and the Total Transit Foundation gives back financially to worthy causes in the community.
