Water Missions International Selected for State’s “Angel List”

Charleston, SC, November 17, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Water Missions International (WMI) was among ten nonprofit organizations recognized by the Secretary of State’s office for its annual “angel list,” a designation that ranks it a trustworthy charity.

The Secretary of State released the “Scrooges and Angels” list Wednesday identifying charities that are registered in South Carolina. The two groups are categorized as those that spend most of their collections on programs related to their causes and those that spend the least. Charities also are recognized for complying with state laws guiding charities and for using volunteers.

“It’s a great honor to receive this award,” said Brad Reed, WMI’s president and CEO. “Not only does the Angel Award recommend Water Missions as a place that is worthy and deserving of donated gifts, but it’s an affirmation that we are being good stewards of our resources.”

The Scrooges and Angels list is the Secretary of State’s annual listing of those charities that represent some of the best and worst of charitable giving. Initially the Secretary of State listed only the Scrooges—or those registered charities that give little or none of their donations to their listed charitable causes. Later the Secretary of State’s office decided to recognize those charities that give a majority of their received donations to their charitable causes.

“South Carolinians are known for their generosity, but we must protect the citizens of this state from organizations that take advantage of this generous spirit of giving,” said Secretary of State Mark Hammond. “The Scrooge and Angel lists are designed to educate the public about the need to check into a charity before making a donation.”

According to the Secretary of State’s office, the Scrooge list is based on the charitable organization’s failure to spend a high percentage of expenditures on actual programs. The Angels list includes those that exemplify charitable work.

The list provides the percentage of the program expenses divided by the total expenses. WMI ranked fourth on the Angel list, with 89.2% of total offerings going directly to its programs.
