Celebration, FL, April 25, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Celebration, FL & Limpopo Provence , Kgautsuana , South Africa
Billions of people worldwide do not have access to clean safe water or sanitation. Amy Allen, a typical career and “Soccer Mom” decided to do something about it and she started Global Change Inc., a Florida based non-profit organization. Within the first 6 months of operation, Global Change Inc. awarded its first grant, $10,500. in the Limpopo region at Kgautsuane South Africa, the first in the “Global Change Inc. – Hippo Roller South Africa Community Grant” program. The grant purchased over 100 “Hippo Rollers,” a unique rolling water wheel barrel that can transport 24 gallons of water in a single trip.
Hippo Rollers have been used by the World Food Progamme and other humanitarian organizations throughout Africa. Global Change Inc. collaborated with Clara Masinga, manager of the Kgautswane Multi-purpose Community Centre and a recipient of numerous awards for outstanding contribution to rural development as a cultural liaison for the Kgautsuane community recipients. Masinga pointed out that, “culturally girls and women were tasked with hauling water throughout the day, foregoing school. Water was hauled in discarded fuel cans or buckets, on top of the girl’s heads. To gather enough water for a family for one day, girls carried buckets weighing up to 45 pounds four to five times daily. Using the Hippo Roller it can be done in one trip, allowing the girls to return to school.” Masinga said, “Using the Hippo Roller has also had gender related implications. Previously it was woman’s (and girl’s) duties to collect water. Since the roller, boys, have also started to get involved in water collecting – therefore changing cultural aspects as well. Also, because people can transport more water they have started to cultivate their own little food gardens which helps the households in terms of nutrition and self -sufficiency. Families living together could be as much as 10 or even up to fifteen people, so a donation of 100 rollers can help provide water for over 1000 family members.”
During the handover ceremony on April 15th, there were many more community members that needed a Hippo Roller than there were to donate. Allen said, “ The Global Change Inc. board has resolved create an ongoing South Africa Community Grant program to include providing 200 more Hippo Rollers.”
Allen said, “The basis of our success is the power to leverage the power of many small donors using the internet and social media to connect.”
