"I know the Common Core is going to be met with a great deal of resistance, and felt it was important to speak out in support of these new standards," explained Adam Caller, one of only two British education consultants to have been awarded full membership of the US Independent Education Consultants Association. "I have extensive experience of several international education systems, and I experienced the impact of the fledgling National Curriculum on the British education system first hand, so I can sympathise with concerns that the Common Core will cause a great deal of upheaval. I can see why many would resist a system that would identify certain educational milestones as universally important when the American states are so diverse in what they consider to be important morally, their geography, culture and local history."

"However," Adam continued, "I have also experienced the diversity in education standards within one science department whilst teaching in an American school. One class benefited from an excellent teacher who gave them a solid grounding in physics, the other class had a very different experience. For the former, it was easy for them to attain an A-grade, whereas the latter class struggled terribly. This discrepancy within one school highlights the potential for huge discrepancies in standard across entire states and the whole country. The Common Core is the only way to ensure that all children get the educational standards they deserve regardless of where they happen to be educated."

"The adoption of the Common Core State Standards could also be the first step to a system that will remove the need for SATs as the only measure of college suitability," Adam added. "There is a momentum building to move away from the SAT, but this cannot happen as long as individual teachers in each school are setting arbitrary courses and grading. It may take time for the Common Core to be developed into a system that will be widely accepted," Adam concluded, "but I firmly believe that it's a critical and necessary first step towards fair and consistent state education in America."
