Austin Conference to Address Violence Against Women - the Most Challenging Issue Facing Women and Girls in 21st Century
The 8th annual ACT Women Conference for the Spiritual Transformation of Women, titled "Women Defining Justice in the 21st Century" will be held in Austin, at Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin, at Town Lake, Saturday May 1, from 9:30am to 6:00pm. The event will feature speakers Layli Miller-Muro, Professor Sarah Buel and Rebecca Powers. A parallel ACT Girls conference, featuring interactive workshops, will be held at the same time and location.
Austin, TX, April 28, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Advancing Community Through Women (ACT Women) says it is holding its 8th Annual conference May 1 at the Radisson in Austin, with a line up of speakers to include such activists and professional women as UT Professor Sarah Buel and award-winning rights attorney Layli Miller-Muro. The speakers will address, upfront, the topic of violence against women while promoting solutions. The non-profit organization, whose primary mission is to educate and encourage women to effect change, using spiritual tools, says that a parallel conference by sister organization ACT Girls will also be held at the same time and location, featuring Workshops.

The Tahirih Justice Center protects immigrant women and girls from violence, advocates for their legal rights, supports their courage to seek justice and empowers them to achieve equality. Miller-Muro is a former attorney-advisor at the U.S. Department of Justice, Board of Immigration Appeals, and winner of a landmark case benefiting asylum seekers in the US.

Professor Sarah Buel, Co-Director, University of Texas School of Law Domestic Violence Center. This former assistant district attorney and supervisor of Harvard Law School’s battered women’s advocacy project now guides students of the UT School of Law’s Domestic Violence Center as they represent victims of domestic violence.
Topic: Building the Bridge from Exploitation to Empowerment.
Rebecca Powers, Founder & CEO, Impact Austin, a progressive leader in women’s philanthropy, bringing new resources to the community and making philanthropy accessible. They engage, develop and inspire women to effect positive change.
