Podcast Provides Guidance to Create and Refine a College List
In his latest podcast, Mike Rivera of Top-Tier Tutoring offers tips and strategies for high schoolers to use in order to create the right college list for them.
West Orange, NJ, April 28, 2010 --(PR.com)-- It’s that time of year again, when high school juniors, and even sophomores, start thinking about which colleges and universities to which they are going to apply. With over 4,000 institutions of higher learning in the United States alone, this task can be quite daunting. This podcast endeavors to aid in the creation and refinement of a college list. To listen to the podcast, go to www.bit.ly/9d60bD.
In this podcast, co-founder, college counselor and tutor Mike Rivera of Top-Tier Tutoring offers tips and strategies to develop the student’s initial college list. Items to consider include the student’s proposed major, geographic preferences, rural or urban setting, among others. Once the list is created, the podcast goes on to suggest ways to refine it to a more manageable size, suitable for campus visits and, ultimately, applications. According to Rivera, students should apply to one or two “safety” and “reach” schools each, with the bulk of the applications going to “match” schools.
“When a student begins college counseling with Top-Tier Tutoring, the first task is to create the proper college list, which starts with a thorough self-assessment,” explains Rivera. He continues: “The list needs to focus on the student’s desires and reflect the student’s personality, learning style and areas of interest, both academically and geographically. Ultimately, the broad initial list will be culled down to a list of 8-12 colleges to which the student will visit and submit applications, using the internet, books and other tools. Once acceptances are received, a second look at those colleges is made in order to determine the best campus placement for that student. One size definitely does not fit all.”
