Teens Advised to Plan Ahead for Summer Employment

Scottsdale, AZ, April 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- With the end of the school year approaching, many Valley high school students are considering whether to seek employment during summer vacation. Finding employment is a more difficult undertaking than in years. The national teen unemployment rate is up 10 percent compared to 2007 as qualified adults are being hired for minimum wage jobs traditionally taken by teens.

According to local college planning service, AZ College Solutions, there are pros and cons to teen employment and offers the following points for students and parents to consider.

1.Colleges’ view. Work is a great way for teens to develop skills like time-management, communication and team-work that can be highlighted on college applications. However, it should not trump vital academic or sports training.
2. Potential Disadvantages. Studies have shown potential negative consequences on student employment such as a negative impact on grades and a pessimistic view on work in general.
3. Alternatives to work. There are alternatives for students who are unable to land a job. Taking community college credits would save money in the future. Students can work independently by identifying services in demand in their neighborhood: pet-walking, car-washing, child care, computer repair. Volunteering is also worthwhile and looks impressive to future hiring managers and college admissions officers.
4. Effect on financial aid. Income earned by high school seniors must be reported on the family’s FAFSA form. A student will be expected to contribute approximately 50 percent of their earnings, after the first $3,750, towards college expenses.
5. Job-search tips. Look for jobs within growing industries such as healthcare as well as those that traditionally hire teens, such as food service. Use a variety of avenues for your job search. Talk to local shops, restaurants and community centers, inquire within your network of friends and relatives and utilize on-line resources such as Craigslist. Cities such as Tempe and Scottsdale offer teen job search resources.
