Balfour Beatty Construction Builds Ronald Mcdonald Houses on Two Coasts

Dallas, TX, April 29, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Balfour Beatty Construction is celebrating its contributions to two new Ronald McDonald Houses—the “House(s)-That-Love Built®”—each on opposite sides of the United States. On Friday, April 23, the House in San Diego, California received the 2010 Project Achievement Award in the New Building Construction Less than $25 Million category from the San Diego chapter of the Construction Management Association of America. This news comes on the heels of the groundbreaking of the Ronald McDonald House®, which Balfour Beatty Construction is currently building for Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater Washington, D.C. in Washington, D.C.

Barnhart Balfour Beatty donated construction services at cost and coordinated material and labor donations of nearly $3 million to build the new Ronald McDonald House for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. Completed in June 2009, the House has received several prestigious industry awards, including the “Build San Diego Award – Private Work,” from the San Diego Associated General Contractors of America, which the project received in November 2009. The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home away from home” to families with seriously ill children in local hospitals.

Located atop a six-story parking garage across the street from Rady Children’s Hospital, the 65,000-square-foot House in San Diego has 47 bedrooms and dining for 100, quadrupling the space of their prior facility. In addition, a Family Care Center offers a computer lab, arts and crafts room, children’s playroom, teen center, play yard, faith room, outdoor play areas, laundry, and day resting rooms. Following strict green building standards, the new building is striving for LEED® gold certification. Joseph Wong Design Associates was the architect.

“From the outset, this project has been a labor of love,” says Barnhart Balfour Beatty general superintendent Dave Christensen, a cancer survivor himself. “Workers onsite didn’t need extra motivation, because they could look across the street to see a snapshot of the families we were building the project for.”

In Washington, D.C., a groundbreaking ceremony for their new House was held on March 19, 2010. The three-story, 22,895-square-foot building will feature 26 guest rooms, nearly doubling the accommodations for families of children being treated at nearby hospitals, such as the Children’s National Medical Center and Georgetown Hospital. In addition, the House will include special suites for children with compromised immune systems.

At the groundbreaking, Balfour Beatty division president Steve Smithgall was recognized for being part of the Hearts and Hammers crew that started the new House project four years ago. Said Smithgall, “When we learned that families were being turned down because the existing D.C. House could not accommodate children with depressed immune systems, we were hooked. It’s a good feeling to know we are making a difference for families who already are facing unimaginable challenges.”

The new Washington D.C. facility will be one of three LEED Certified Ronald McDonald Houses in the world. Balfour Beatty Construction has donated all preconstruction and general contracting services to build the House. The developer (Greenbaum and Rose), designer (Davis Carter Scott), and approximately 30 other consultants, trade contractors, and suppliers have donated time and materials to the project as well.
