When asked what the business continuity project for the Natural History Museum involved, Isobel replied; "We took the NHM through all steps of the business continuity planning process, beginning with detailed business impact analyses of all aspects of the museum's functions in order to understand their critical operations. We then developed strategy options based on key business continuity scenarios, such as supply chain failure and loss of premises. From there we developed a plan to meet these needs, validating it through scenario-based exercises and training the museum staff in its implementation."
"Whilst a museum shares many standard business processes with any other organisation, there are some subtle differences in terms of the dependency it has on its collections and the facility that houses it," Isobel explained. "Not many recovery sites come complete with research laboratories and environmentally-controlled storage facilities to house priceless specimens! This adds obvious complexities to the business continuity planning process. The Natural History Museum, like many others, is housed in an exquisite, historical and by default, old building, creating its own challenges in continuity planning."
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has stated that all museums must have business continuity plans in place. "This can be a rather daunting prospect for museum facilities managers," said Isobel.
