Volunteers Receive Los Angeles Children’s Charity Angel Award

Pasadena, CA, May 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Local jeweler and restaurateurs were honored and presented with Hillsides Community Angel Award during Child Abuse Prevention Month. Hillsides, a foster care charity serving children and families living in Los Angeles County, including Pasadena, presented the awards to Nelson Holdo, owner of Asanti Fine Jewellers, and Jack Huang and Karen Tanji Huang, Pasadena restaurateurs, during its Annual Angel Awards Ceremony. The children’s charity also honored additional donors and volunteers who have exceeded the charity’s expectations and contributed so much of their resources to ensure that the mission of creating safe places continues.

“The thing about angels is that they intervene when we least expect and when we need it the most. This is true for all the recipients today. We couldn’t do it without you, literally,” said Joseph M. Costa, Hillsides chief executive officer. “The challenges the children and families we serve face are daunting! The resources are always scarce. As a result, the care that we provide is never enough so what we do must always be the best. For your generous support with your time, talent, and treasure, we thank you.”

Familiar with the charity through his involvement with other community groups, Holdo’s interest piqued when a board member shared her passion for Hillsides. Pasadena resident Holly Davis approached Holdo about joining the board of directors, set up a tour of the campus, and mentioned the work being done to create safe places for children in need. From that point on, Holdo was “hooked on helping Hillsides.”

Holdo quickly became a supporter of the charity donating through his business as well as personally. He served on the board and on the membership committee. In addition, other community organizations are beneficiaries of Holdo’s philanthropic activities.

From the executive director to the children that live on campus, the people involved at Hillsides keeps Holdo engaged, according to him. “I have made Hillsides a family tradition, using the Hillsides Guild’s Holiday Celebration as the kickoff to the Christmas season while my daughter volunteers through her involvement in the National Charity League,” said Holdo.

As owners of Bar Celona, Villa SORRISO and ix∙tapa cantina, the Huangs underwrote the Hillsides Foster Soles Kickoff Party at Bar Celona. Taking big steps to lead the Foster Soles committee, Karen has generously agreed to sponsor the memorable event again this year. Gracious to the charity’s guests, they offered Hillsides’ major donors and legacy society members a wonderful recognition dinner at Villa SORRISO.

In addition to hosting events at their restaurants, Karen, a board member of the charity, has been called upon to lead tours of Hillsides for friends who are interested in learning more about the mission. Besides supporting Hillsides, the Huangs are well-respected and known to assist other community organizations.

“Because of your commitment and care, in spite of the challenges, we are confident that Hillsides will continue to be that safe place for children and families that allows them to be restored to a full life filled with hope to realize all their dreams,” Costa told award recipients.

Held at the Old Mill in San Marino, the Annual Angel Awards Ceremony was sponsored by Jack Tahanian Insurance Company, Jeanette Uebele, Menyea’s Décor, Antiques and Objects D’Art and Lincoln Avenue Nursery, Inc. To learn more about Hillsides, visit www.Hillsides.org.
