Adelphi University Honors Noel Burks ’43, M.S.W. ’65 with the Ruth Stratton Harley Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award

Garden City, NY, May 15, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Noel Burks’43, M.S.W.’65 will receive the Ruth Stratton Harley Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Adelphi University at its 114th Commencement on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, NY.

Mrs. Burks exemplifies outstanding commitment, loyal support, friendship, and legacy to Adelphi University. She has played an integral role in the Friends of the Adelphi University Library, and served as president of the organization from 1996 through 2006. In addition to her active involvement in the University community and participation in events, she has provided invaluable leadership and counsel to Adelphi as a board member of the Alumni Association for more than 50 years, including as a past president. The University recognized Mrs. Burks in 2006 for her longstanding service.

Her extraordinary dedication to her alma mater continues a pattern of generosity begun by her mother, Florence Fenning Donaghy ’14, and followed by herself and her sister, Carol Donaghy Cunningham ’47. Mrs. Burks’ mother played an integral role in the 1971 fundraising campaign to repair and restore the Sanford Memorial Window. The stained glass window – a gift from the Class of 1914 in memory of Professor John Augustine Sanford – can now be found in the Swirbul Library of the Garden City Campus. Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Burks’ late mother, this beautiful and historic piece of art has been preserved for future generations of the Adelphi community to enjoy.

In addition to her involvement at Adelphi, Mrs. Burks is also active in her community. Over the years, she has offered her time and talent as a member of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, as well as the Long Island Panhellenic group. In 2004, the Junior League of Long Island honored her for her volunteerism.

A 1943 graduate of Adelphi University’s College of Arts and Sciences and a 1965 M.S.W. graduate from the University’s School of Social Work, Mrs. Burks is a retired director of staff development of the Nassau County Department of Social Services. Mrs. Burks currently resides in South Setauket, NY.

Adelphi University will confirm more than 2,800 graduates at the associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels at its Commencement. Carol A. Ammon ’79, founder and retired CEO and chairman of Endo Pharmaceuticals Inc., will deliver the Commencement address and receive an honorary degree. An honorary degree will also be presented to Lynn Nottage, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright.
