NPSA Offers Help to Tennessee Flood Victims
The National Portable Storage Association is encouraging members to donate portable storage containers to charitable organizations in the wake of the Tennessee floods.
Kansas city, MO, May 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- As flood waters continue receding in Tennessee, volunteers are rushing to the scene to help clean up a devastated Nashville. One organization, Hands On Nashville, is overseeing 12,000 volunteers while Volunteer Tennessee is taking emergency donations to help families whose homes were destroyed by the floodwaters and celebrities are donating monies to help victims.
According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the flood that hit Nashville was a 1,000-year flood, which means it was an event that could be expected to happen once in every 1,000 years. The Army Corps of Engineers has said the flash nature of the flood made damages unavoidable. Downtown Nashville has a small advantage because of topography, but flooding has also damaged the city’s core.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Tennessee who are affected by the 1,000-year flood," says John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "The NPSA is encouraging our members to donate portable storage units to charitable organizations that can use the containers to help people in the midst of this crisis."
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) offers strategic advice for the flood recovery process. For example, if a home or business has suffered damage the insurance company should be contacted immediately. Business owners should also have experts check for structural damage before re-entering a building to avoid being trapped in a collapse. Flood victims should always take photos of floodwater in the building and save any damaged property.
The NFIP also suggests making a list of damaged or lost items and including the purchase date and value with receipts. Some damaged items may require disposal. When this is the case, the NFIP suggests keeping photos of those items. Flood victims should also keep the power off until an electrician has inspected the building for safety and prevent mold by removing wet contaminants immediately.
