Shoe Metro Giving Back to the Community

Shoe Metro is strengthening its community outreach efforts, donating gifts and volunteer service. Recently, the online retailer has contributed to a San Diego school walkathon and the March For Babies event.

San Diego, CA, May 26, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Online retailer, Shoe Metro, recently sponsored a walkathon event for local San Diego school, John Muir K-12 Magnet School. The school hopes to raise money to fund a much-needed science program, which has been dropped due to state and city budget cuts in education. Shoe Metro is committed to supporting high quality educational needs for the youth of San Diego.

"Financial woes have hit our schools especially hard," says David Duong, CEO of Shoe Metro. "But we can't let that jeopardize the futures of our children. That's why Shoe Metro decided to contribute in any way that we could to this event."

The John Muir Magnet School walkathon event, appropriately titled "The Muirathon," took place on the school playgrounds. Shoe Metro donated prizes in gift certificates to the Muirathon's silent auction. The company also contributed volunteers to the event staff for the day of the Muirathon. The event turned out to be a success, raising a great amount of funds for the school.

Shoe Metro's sponsorship of the Muirathon event is only one part of the company's re-doubled efforts to give back to the community. Shoe Metro also participated in the March of Dimes' March For Babies walking event in San Diego. The 5-mile event helps raise funds to support moms and future mothers across the nation, assisting them in having healthy, full-term pregnancies. Funds from the event also go towards research on various health problems associated with babies. To date, the March of Dimes Foundation has raised $1.8 billion towards its cause. The non-profit organization works to treat babies with weak hearts or weak lungs, prevent oral facial defects, and cure vision defects--all of which are common in prematurely-born babies. The organization also seeks to educate pregnant mothers on ways to prevent premature birth in the first place.

"Shoe Metro wholeheartedly supports the efforts of March For Babies," says Duong. "We chose to participate in order to raise health awareness to the outside world as well as to the mothers within our own company."

Shoe Metro will continue its community outreach efforts in the future. The company plans to participate in the Surfrider Foundation's Beach Cleanup. The San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation organizes volunteers for beach cleanups three times every month, cleaning up beaches all over the greater San Diego area. Shoe Metro employees will be volunteering to clean up Pacific Beach.
