The Arts Edge Summer, a New Performing Arts Program in NYC, Combines Musical Theater with College Prep for High School Students
The Arts Edge Summer Program is a New Performing Arts Program in New York City that combines musical theater with college prep for high school students. Students can put a little glee in their summer with a unique program that offers expert guidance from faculty members of leading performing arts institutions. The Arts Edge Summer Program is designed for high school students seriously considering a college major in musical theater.
New York, NY, May 27, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The college admissions process is complicated enough, with students stressing over grades, test scores, essays and extracurricular activities, but high school students pursuing performing arts educations have to add auditions to the list of application requirements. One educational consulting firm is offering aspiring singers, dancers and actors and those in the visual arts, the specialized guidance they need to help their college applications, portfolios and auditions stand out so they can get in. The Arts Edge consultancy has created The Arts Edge Summer, a two-week intensive program with daily classes in musical theater, acting, voice and speech, and dance, delivered by well-known professionals in performing arts education.
The Arts Edge Summer Program, to be held in New York City August 9 through 20, is designed for high school students seriously considering a college major in musical theater. Uniquely, this program brings together professionals from the top performing arts schools across the nation. It is the only program that offers students insights on admissions processes from these prestigious performing arts institutions, while also honing their performing arts skills.
The program was developed by Halley Shefler, founder of The Arts Edge education consultancy who has been dean of admissions at The Boston Conservatory for more than 11 years; and Andrea Kramer, founder of Ballet Forte, a pre-professional dance conservatory. Ms. Shefler brings 30 years of experience in higher education including admissions and academic positions at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts and The Longy School of Music. She has also served on the faculties of private and public schools in New York and Boston, including The Dalton School and The Rhodes School.
“The Arts Edge Summer is not just another summer theater or music camp. The program is specially designed to help performing arts students prepare themselves for the college admissions process,” said Ms. Shefler. “Students in the performing arts are often not well-served by high school guidance counselors who are spread too thin and who may not have the specialized expertise that an arts student needs. That’s where The Arts Edge comes in.”
The intensive two-week program includes daily classes in musical theater, acting, dance, and voice and speech. During the final week, students and their parents will meet individually with Halley Shefler and Andrea Kramer to discuss individual needs and map out a course of action.
Additional, notable members of The Arts Edge Summer faculty include:
- Neil Donohoe, Director, Theater Division, Boston Conservatory
- Roger Grodsky, Director, Musical Theater and Associate Professor of Musical Theater at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music
- Ingrid Sonnichsen, Associate Teaching Professor of Acting at Carnegie Mellon University
- Jennifer Burke, Assistant Professor at University of Miami’s BFA Theater Program
- Michelle Chasse, Musical Theater Dance Coordinator and Resident Choreographer; Jazz, Ballet at the Boston Conservatory
