Surfaces: Patrick Adams & Peter Hoffer
Opening cocktail reception: Friday, June 4, 2010 5-8PM
Gallery KH is pleased to present Surfaces, a new collection of interpretations on the landscape as solitary subject by artists Patrick Adams and Peter Hoffer, opening June 4 through July 20, 2010. An opening night cocktail reception is scheduled for Friday, June 4th, 5-8PM. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
“While they couldn't be more different in subject matter, Peter Hoffer and Patrick Adams each bring a unique approach to the surfaces of their work. We are thrilled to be showcasing these artists side by side so as to highlight the incredible variances in their techniques.” says Kristen Hagan, Gallery KH Co-Director. Hagan continues, “One of the most interesting commonalities between these two artists is their ability to work on extremely large and small scales. It is not often that an artist can translate their point of view on such a variant of sizes but both Hoffer and Adams do so incredibly well.”
Canadian artist Peter Hoffer’s landscape painting create a visual juxtaposition between traditional landscapes, abstract and contemporary art. Hoffer’s landscapes are both constructed and deconstructed simultaneously, the viewer is invited to take part in the construction of landscape and painting. As an integral part of the process, he cracks, stresses and treats the layers of paint to great washes of runny paint that stain the foregrounds. To these varied surfaces Hoffer then applies a thick layer of resin over the entire painting, creating a glass like surface. Viewers standing before them become part of the scenery itself as their reflections are superimposed. This duality of surfaces creates dichotomies of tranquility vs. chaos and the wild vs. the pristine.
Peter Hoffer was born in Brantford Ontario in 1965. He has a M.F.A. from Concordia University in Montréal, degrees from the University of Guelph, Ontario, and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. He has lived and worked in Toronto, New York City, and Montreal where he now resides.
Patrick Adams earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Kentucky in 1992. He taught in the Art Department at Asbury College for several years and now works full time in his studio. Mr. Adams' work has been included in exhibitions at several galleries and museums throughout the region, and he shows his work regularly in Chicago and Nashville. He has twice been awarded the prestigious Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council, and his paintings are in many private and corporate collections across the United States. Adams was one of 14 Kentucky artists featured in the KET (Kentucky Educational Television) series, Looking at Painting. He resides with his wife Terre and three children Margaret, William and Abigail in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
States Adams, “In the process of creating a painting, there remains, despite the conscious exertion of my will, a thread of the mysterious and seemingly arbitrary. This admission implies there is something that emerges in the image beyond the interaction of intellect and material. It is this discovery, or recognition of the unanticipated that drives my work and is, in fact, it's very essence.”
