Chicago, IL, May 28, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Volunteer Group CANTER Illinois Helps Retiring Thoroughbreds Find Homes
CANTER (Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses) Illinois announces it will hold its 2nd Annual CANTER Open Benefit and Fun Show at Valley View Acres, 5116 Mt. Thabor Rd., Woodstock, IL on Sunday, June 13th, 9:00 am.
CANTER Illinois is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation dedicated to finding new careers and new homes for retiring Thoroughbreds. This is a casual, fun show intended to give riders and horses show experience in a relaxed, safe environment.
As exciting and glamorous as the sport of horse racing is, few people stop to think about what happens to the athletes after their careers have peaked. Like any other professional athlete, a racehorse’s career success is dependent on its youth, athletic ability and physical soundness. As any athlete ages, whatever the species, injuries become more frequent and more debilitating. And many sound horses are retired from racing simply because it’s not the right job for them.
CANTER Illinois Executive Director, Denise Pumfrey explains “Think of CANTER as an outplacement service for racehorses. Many just need to be re-trained for new jobs like pleasure riding, hunting and dressage. Even racehorses who have had career-ending injuries can maintain soundness as pleasure mounts.”
CANTER is a completely volunteer-run organization, and 100% of the Benefit Show funds go directly to helping provide veterinary care, food, board, transportation, and other transition costs for horses that need new homes. In addition to being a good cause, the atmosphere is casual and fun. “The Benefit Show is a great event for people to experience a horse show in a relaxed, family-friendly environment,” said Pumfrey.
In addition to the show, there will also be a silent auction. Anyone wishing to donate or sponsor a class at the Benefit Show can find more details at http: www.canterusa.org/illinois.
