Retmarker Receives Honourable Mention in Cotec-Unicer Award for Innovative Products
Retmarker is a Medical Device for Decision Support in the ophthalmology domain, developed by Critical Health in partnership with AIBILI (Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image).
Coimbra, Portugal, June 04, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Critical Health was distinguished yesterday with an Honourable Mention in the COTEC-UNICER Award for Innovation Products, an award attributed by the Entrepreneurial Association for Innovation (Associação Empresarial para a Inovação - COTEC) and UNICER , and supported by the Expresso Newspaper. This award aims to recognize the Retmarker product, a Medical Device for decision support in the ophthalmology domain from Critical Health, a holding of Critical SGPS devoted to the development of groundbreaking technological solutions to prevent loss of mobility and vision. This award was presented by Carlos Moreira da Silva, Chairman at COTEC, and António Pires de Lima, UNICER’s President of the Executive Board, during the 7th COTEC National Innovation Encounter, which this year was dedicated to the theme “The Innovator’s DNA,” and was held in Estoril’s Congress Centre and had the presence of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva.
Critical Health is a groundbreaking software solution, recently qualified as a "Class IIa Medical Device" at a European level. This system simplifies the diagnostic made by ophthalmologists, as they now have a more precise source of information, which is not prone to errors related to the complexity in the estimations of lesion areas present in each subfield of a retinography (colour fundus photograph), a non-invasive imaging method, essential for the monitoring of the progression of several retinal pathologies.
Retmarker has been developed in conjunction with several experts from AIBILI (Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image), a R&D institute located in Coimbra.
Retmarker was also recently distinguished in London with a prize in the European IT Excellence Awards.
Available in several versions, RetmarkerDR monitors the progression of Diabetic Retinopathy, using advanced proprietary algorithms that help ophthalmologists detect and calculate the appearance and disappearance rates of microaneurysms in the retina and infer, with the help of this information, the evolution of a disease consequence of Diabetes, which is one of the highest growing causes of preventable blindness in developed countries. RetmarkerC enables the automatic detection of changes in the retina due to several pathologies. As to RetmarkerAMD , it is a new solution in development that enables the computer-assisted marking of digital images of patients with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the main cause of blindness in persons over 50 in developed countries.
