Silverlake Independent JCC Dedicates Community Room to Episcopal Bishop J. Jon Bruno
Los Angeles, CA, June 05, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center Dedicates Room to Episcopal Bishop of Los Angeles J. Jon Bruno
On June 11, 2010 the Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center (SIJCC) will formally dedicate its community room to the Episcopal Bishop of Los Angeles J. Jon Bruno.
The relationship between the Bishop and the SIJCC began in 2005 when the building the center inhabited was put up for sale. In a bid to continue operating as a Jewish community center, a group of dedicated community members and the center’s director, Ruth Shavit, banded together to attempt to purchase the property. Finding itself short of the capital necessary to make the down payment on the mortgage, the SIJCC approached Bishop Bruno, who in a happy and fortuitous coincidence played basketball at the JCC gymnasium in his youth. The Bishop magnanimously agreed to put up half of the down payment required to purchase the building.
The past five years have seen the center stabilize and begin to flourish. With over 100 children in a highly sought-after preschool, a Jewish Learning Center for children five to eight years old, and a handful of other community programs, the center has established a strong nucleus of members while becoming financially stabile. In April of 2010 the center returned the Bishop’s investment to him in full. Bishop Bruno’s generosity in helping the center buy the building combined with his acceptance of only his original investment back – effectively turning his contribution into a five-year zero-interest loan – is a truly inspiring act of community.
To thank Bishop Bruno and commemorate his generosity, the SIJCC Board of Directors has resolved to formally dedicate the J. Jon Bruno Community Room within the SIJCC. The dedication will take place at the SIJCC, 1110 Bates Avenue, Los Angeles, 90029 at 9:15AM.
