Kindergartener at Sagemont College Prep School in Weston, FL Helps Save Birds Endangered by Oil Spill
Sagemont kindergarten student enlists his schoolmates, family & friends to collect 169 bottles of Dawn dishwashing liquid to save birds endangered by oil spill.
Weston, FL, June 18, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Oskar Garcia, A Sagemont kindergarten student, loves birds. His teacher and mom say that he is an absolute authority on the topic. Each day he comes to school with new facts about birds. He can tell you about land birds and water birds. He can list their species, coloration and where they live. Oskar’s bedroom is decorated in a bird theme and his clothes usually have some type of bird design on them.
This six year old approached his kindergarten teacher very distressed about the pending oil situation in the gulf waters. He was worried that many birds will soon be covered in oil and he wanted to do something to help. He and his teacher, Vickie Stofsky, searched on Google to get ideas about what they could do to help save the birds. They came up with the plan to ask Oskar's classmates, friends and family members to donate bottles of Dawn dishwashing liquid which is known to be able to safely dissolve tar and oil from animals who get covered in the stuff. They planned to deliver the bottles to Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary located in Tampa (seabirdsanctuary.com). This is the largest wild bird hospital in the U.S. and it is one location where birds are to be brought in case they become drenched in the goo approaching the shoreline.
Oskar was ecstatic about the possibility of helping. He was able to motivate the group to collect about 169 bottles of detergent. He, his family and his teacher's family all drove up to Tampa, Florida to deliver the bottles. They were told that this much dishwashing liquid could potentially save 2000 birds. Oskar simply said "I love birds and I wanted to help."
Earlier in the school year, Oskar's class participated in a community service project where they earned money to provide new shoes for elementary school children in Broward County who very rarely ever get new shoes. Mrs. Stofsky, said "from this project, Oskar became empowered and even at his young age realized that he had the ability to make a difference in the world."
