NSF Funds Mathematical Research at Stevens
Dr. Alexei Miasnikov, Dr. Robert Gilman and Alexander Ushakov of Stevens Institute of Technology were recently awarded NSF funding that enables them to organize the thematic semester on geometric, combinational and computational group theory at the Centre de Recherches Mathmatiques (CRM) in Montreal.
Hoboken, NJ, June 23, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Alexei Miasnikov, Professor, Department Director of Mathematical Sciences at Stevens Institute of Technology, with Dr. Robert Gilman and Alexander Ushakov are seeking to strengthen the connections that "group theory" has with other branches of mathematics and to highlight new promising perspectives. Their recently awarded NSF funding will enable them to organize the thematic semester on geometric, combinational and computational group theory which is planned for the 2010 fall semester at the Centre de Recherches Mathmatiques (CRM) in Montreal. This is the largest algebra forum in 2010.
"We plan to give a series of advanced-level courses on the subject matter so as to make the material available to new researchers in the field, and to discuss the perspectives and general directions for the next advances and results," said Ushakov.
The purpose of this semester-long program is to present state-of-the-art work to a diverse international community of researchers and to discuss the perspectives for the next advances in the field. Researchers from various branches of group theory and computer science will work together on important questions in the field. The exchange of ideas from researchers in a wide range of fields along with students and postdocs will aid in the dissemination of knowledge.
The funds from this grant will also allow these promising U.S. researchers to participate in the events of the semester, offering participation in exciting discussions and opportunities to start collaborations with global specialists and industry leaders.
