Balfour Beatty Construction Receives 2009 Mayor’s International Community Award for Local Corporate Citizenship
Charlotte, NC, June 22, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Balfour Beatty Construction was honored in May for its volunteerism and corporate philanthropy with a 2009 Mayor’s International Community Award from the Charlotte International Cabinet and the Mayor’s office. The award recognizes the philanthropic giving and other forms of support that Mecklenburg County’s foreign-owned firms provide to community organizations in the Charlotte area.
"We are honored to be recognized for our commitment to giving back to our community," said John Woodcock, President of the company’s Charlotte-based Carolinas Division. "Our company philosophy of improving the quality of life in the communities where we live, work and play is something we actively practice and encourage at the company and individual level."
The largest construction firm in the Carolinas, Balfour Beatty was honored in the medium-company category for businesses with 51 to 200 local employees. Over the past five years alone, the firm has given more than $7.1 million in philanthropic donations and charitable contributions throughout North Carolina. In 2009, the firm raised more than $55,000 for the Arts and Science Council’s annual drive and $1.5 million for local community efforts. Balfour Beatty is also actively involved in other local community organizations including Hearts and Hammers, Race Playce, and Teach for America.
In 2009, Balfour Beatty acquired Charlotte-based contractor, RT Dooley, a family-owned business with a long history of giving back to the local community. Says RT Dooley COO Bob Dooley, "Balfour Beatty’s culture of philanthropy and corporate citizenship in Charlotte perfectly aligned with RT Dooley’s values and our commitment to investing in the community. This alignment was one of the driving factors in our decision to join the Balfour Beatty family."
"Although our parent company is located in London, Balfour Beatty Construction is truly a local firm at heart," said Woodcock. "The company and our employees play an active role in the Charlotte community in a number of ways including fund raising, mentorships, community service, and community partnerships. Each year, I’m amazed at how generously our team members give of their time, expertise and dollars to improve the well-being of the community and it’s a true honor to have those efforts recognized."
