A Creative New Site for a Creative Community Digital Pulp Redesigns Emerson College Website

Digital Pulp and Emerson College have announced the launch of the new website for Emerson College. The new site captures the energy and creativity of this top school for the communications arts.

New York, NY, June 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Digital Pulp and Emerson College have announced the launch of an interactive and user-friendly new website for Emerson College (http://www.emerson.edu) that highlights the college’s ultra-creative community. The new site, designed by Digital Pulp, captures the energy and creativity of this top school for the communications arts and introduces new features that enable students, faculty, alumni, parents and staff to quickly access and engage with real-time events.

“While the most critical function for any college’s website is to provide information, we also wanted to create ways for our visitors to participate in conversations, hear directly from Emersonians, and as much as possible, experience Emerson live,” said Marta Ruohoniemi, Emerson’s web redesign project manager.

To that end, Digital Pulp (DP) designed the site so practically every page includes related videos and links to the College’s Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr, and ProArts Connect portals. Visitors can participate in the communities within those sections and also read and comment on the numerous blogs throughout the website.

Emerson Live, a new feature on the site, aggregates and presents video and audio created by students and staff through real-time webcasts, new stories, slideshows and Tweets. The backend functionality enables Emerson content editors to select what to showcase and schedule cycles of presentations so the information viewed is always changing.

Another new feature is the Social Media Directory. Here, a visitor can view the most recent social media content by department, by platform, and by student groups or organizations. Emerson content editors have the ability to easily change content at will so that visitors can engage with the very latest happenings at the school.

One of the challenges of the project was to help Emerson pull together the many creative, and diverse, influences that were impacting the web presence. According to Gene Lewis, DP Creative Director, “the most rewarding part of the project for me was helping Emerson find its voice. Vibrant imagery can be found throughout the site, while Emerson Live highlights the very essence of a school bent on creativity and media."

To enable the Emerson web team to easily maintain the site, DP built the site in Drupal, an open source content management system (CMS). In addition, the firm developed the home page using Javascript , rather than Flash, so the site is more accessible across multiple platforms.

Andy Tiedemann, Vice President, Communications and Marketing at Emerson, noted that “the new website looks fabulous and I think users are going to find it easy to find what they are seeking!”

The Twitter community is already commenting on the site’s makeover: http://twitter.com/#search?q=%40EmersonCollege and according to Ms. Ruohoniemi, “Everyone’s loving the new design.”
