M&D Mechanical Sees Record Employment, Increase in Projects Despite Down Economy
Decatur, AL, July 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- With new projects awarded and record high employment, Decatur-Alabama-based M&D Mechanical Contractors, Inc. is thriving as it celebrates its 100th year in business despite the down economy.
Recent new projects announced by M&D Mechanical Contractors' include NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi and the Madison Hospital in Madison, Ala. The company is completing the second phase of a research lab in the System Software Engineering Annex on the Redstone Arsenal, during which they have provided mechanical, plumbing, and utility services. Additionally, M&D Mechanical Contractors is also finishing a plumbing, mechanical, and laboratory gas project in the NASA Building 4602 at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
The staff at M&D Mechanical Contractors has grown from the company's typical range of 120-130 employees to 218 employees to fulfill the higher volume of projects – a volume the company expects to continue.
"When we add new employees, we hire them based on the consistent ongoing level of work that we are receiving, rather than based on short-term needs," said Bobby Allfrey of M&D Mechanical Contractors. "We make a large ongoing investment in our employees, including providing specialized skills training. Our employees are loyal and typically stay with us for many years."
An example of this investment was made evident this year as the company celebrated the graduations of two of its employees from the North Alabama Craft Training Foundation (NACTF) program. W.C. Taylor graduated from the pipe fitting program and John Robinson completed the sheet metal program. M&D Mechanical Contractors participates in the program to increase the skill level of employees, which results in higher-quality work.
Another indicator that business is growing for M&D Mechanical Contractors is the recent $250,000 investment in new equipment for the company’s metal and pipe fabrication shops. The new equipment includes a spiral duct fabrication machine and orbital MIG welding equipment. The spiral duct fabrication machine will allow the company to create spiral duct in-house rather than purchasing the duct from another vendor. The new welding equipment welds piping in 6-24 inch, highly repeatable and x-ray quality welds at a much higher rate. M&D Mechanical Contractors made the investment in new equipment to increase the efficiency, quality and on-time responsiveness to their customer's needs.
