The ChatRoulette Show Becomes Monthly Recurring Bay Area Event

The Illuminated Theater takes live performance and comedy to a whole new level with The ChatRoulette Show. In this live multimedia variety show, professional performers entertain a live audience as well as with random users of chatroulette, who are projected onto a large screen. And, for those who want to participate, it’s a drinking game. Now a recurring monthly event across the San Francisco Bay Area.

San Francisco, CA, July 02, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Variety Show & Competition / Drinking Game / Online Performance

A Live Performance Featuring the Risque Web Site, www.chatroulette.com.

Next Performances: Thursday, July 22nd, August 27th.

The Illuminated Theater announces with pleasure that The ChatRoulette Show will repeat on a monthly basis with ongoing performances in both San Francisco and Berkeley.

The Illuminated Theater focuses on making theater and live performance events so exciting and fun that people would rather see them than go to a movie or a rock concert. By creating short YouTube versions of shows, performances also become accessible to a larger demographic. After only one week, the first ChatRoulette Show’s video (http://www.youtube.com/user/illuminatedtheater) had over 1,500 views.

A recap of The ChatRoulette Show: On the infamous site chatroulette.com, visitors encounter random strangers via web cams, who may be doing, err, anything. The ChatRoulette Show, which takes place in bars with performance spaces, uses a live Internet connection, projecting a chatroulette.com encounter onto a large screen. Performers take turns entertaining both surprised chatroulette users (who would not expect to encounter, say, a beatboxer or a cellist) as well as the live audience. Performers include singers, magicians, improvisers, and performance artists, who compete for cash and prizes as determined by audience vote.

The show is very participatory: The ChatRoulette Show is an optional drinking game, kicking in when nudity appears on screen. As well, audience members themselves can take a turn and win prizes. Regardless of whether they do either of the above, spectators do far more than just watch. Audience feedback included, “I felt like a rowdy crowd at a Gold Rush saloon, hooting and talking back,” and “I was laughing and cheering with the rest of the crowd from the start. I've never experienced a live performance that was so engaging. The performers, audience and tickled cyber-guests were all riffing off of each other's energy and humor. A meaningful example of how technology can bring people closer together.”

“The reaction to the show has been astounding,” states Jonathan Bender, Artistic Director of The Illuminated Theater. “We’ve had such incredible performers, who by themselves would make a great show. But the unpredictability of not knowing who they’ll perform for–or, with–on chatroulette.com, makes it far more thrilling.”

The ChatRoulette Show returns to The Makeout Room in San Francisco on July 22nd and August 27th; a new Berkeley location and dates are to be announced shortly. Upcoming performers include Delilah Burlesque, Unwoman, and Sam Rogers, the one-mouth band. Shows are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Admission in San Francisco is 21 and over.
