Erie, PA, July 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) recently awarded Barb Sanders, a 30-year employee of EHCA, its 2010 Direct Support Professional of the Year in Pennsylvania. She will accept her award during a presentation in September in Washington, D.C.
“EHCA is proud of Barb’s recognition. This honor is a reflection of Barb’s commitment and the quality services provided by EHCA,” said Peg Smith-Rich, director of residential & program services. “Barb continuously advocates for the people she serves to have unique opportunities and to fulfill their dreams.”
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) care for millions of Americans with disabilities. Thanks to DSPs, people with disabilities are able to live rich, fulfilling, and more independent lives and be active participants in their communities. Over 3/4 of EHCA’s workforce are DSPs. Barb currently works within the MOVE Program at EHCA, but over the course of her career has held and excelled at many positions at the agency. Her drive to ensure everyone served can enjoy a meaningful life has been at the heart of her work, and Barb has often been asked to help train other EHCA employees.
“It is important to recognize the vital services provided by Barb and direct support professionals throughout the country,” said Peter Kowalski, president of ANCOR. “They make an incredibly important contribution to the social and economic fabric of our communities. Barb represents the highest caliber of DSP.”
“We are certainly proud of Barb and honored that she chose to build her career at EHCA,” said Smith-Rich.
The ANCOR Direct Support Professional Recognition Award is judged on criteria in concert with the overall philosophy of ANCOR’s National Advocacy Campaign. Among other criterion, nominees are judged on their effectiveness in building social networks, meaningful and productive participation in the community for person(s) served and advocating or effecting change on behalf of people with disabilities.
“ANCOR evaluated 231 nominations of highly qualified DSPs in selecting the national and state winners,” said ANCOR CEO Renee Pietrangelo. “Barb’s indefatigable commitment to improving people’s access to and participation in the community-at-large is worthy of public recognition as well as our utmost regard and respect.”
The ANCOR National Advocacy Campaign was established to provide a focus on this critical workforce issue. For more information about the DSP workforce shortage visit www.youneedtoknowme.org.
