CITEM: It Pays to be Green: Pines Awards 2010
Pasay, Philippines, July 19, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The summer of 2010 proved to be one of the warmest in Philippine history. The highest temperature on record in Metro Manila is 38.5 degrees Celsius documented on May 14, 1987. In the same month of the current year, Metro Manila residents experienced a sweltering 38 degrees Celsius, almost surpassing the record.
Climatologists have attributed the irregular climate as an effect of El Nino and global warming. Global warming, in large part, has progressively become widespread due to human negligence. As with individuals, it has become an imperative for companies and institutions to partake in environmental responsibility.
The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), an attached arm of the Department of Trade and Industry, sheds light on the importance of eco-friendly business practices and green initiatives with the introduction of the 1st PINES Awards, as part of the 1st Philippine International Eco-Show (PINES) on August 26-28, 2010.
The awards, exclusive to PINES exhibitors, serves as a sought after recognition given to individuals, companies and institutions who have rendered outstanding contributions to the preservation and conservation of the environment. These awards will honor and highlight eco-products and services, green programs and policies and pro-active environmental advocates.
The PINES Awards encourages companies to integrate and institutionalize environmental initiatives in their corporate and organizational practices. Award categories include Best Eco-Lifestyle Product and Services, Best Eco-Industry Product and Services and Best Eco-CSR Program.
Deadline for submission of nomination forms is on July 30, 2010. Comprehensive review and judging will be conducted by a special body comprised of the following credible and respected institutions: ABS – CBN Foundation – Bantay Kalikasan, De La Salle University – Manila (DLSU), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection (BTRCP), Philippine Business for the Environment and Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc (PCEPSDI).
“The PINES Awards is a fresh way of recognizing existing green businesses that help both the environment and the Philippine economy. In this day and age, Green is the new industry standard,” said Thelma Dumpit-Murillo, PINES Project Director and Deputy Executive Director of CITEM.
Winners shall be announced during the Networking and Awards Night, which is scheduled on August 27, 2010.
In line with the PINES core mission, there will also be a national photography competition from July 1 to July 30, 2010 entitled Eco-Photography Tilt, open to all amateur and professional photographers. With the theme “Towards a Greener Earth”, this contest aims to promote the importance of addressing climate change challenges and encourage responsible governance towards the environment through photography. The competition, sponsored by Global Competitiveness, will grant winners a certificate of recognition along with P10,000.00 for the 1st prize, 5,000.00 for the 2nd prize and 3,000.00 for the 3rd prize.
On the last day of the show, PINES gives a special ecological treat for select foreign and local participants, trade buyers and media. The Eco-Business Tour aims to highlight the country’s green industry, initiatives and good environmental practices of both private and public firms. Scheduled on August 28, 2010, the upcoming tour will highlight Subic Bay, Zambales and its resident companies that promote and practice green policies. The tour allows participants to take a first-hand look at the environmental efforts and eco-friendly practices currently being implemented by the featured companies.
The Eco-Business Tour is led by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).
