Wilmer Hutchins Community Gets First New Elementary School in 25 Years
The first school to be built in a quarter of a century in the historic community of Wilmer-Hutchins, located south of Dallas, Texas, has been designed by the firm of KAI Texas.
Dallas, TX, July 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The $15-million structure for the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) will be the only elementary school in operation in a 15-square-mile area. Wilmer-Hutchins had its own school district until state authorities closed several schools due to poor performance in 2004. The school district officially disbanded in 2006 and was absorbed by Dallas ISD. Children living in the area have been attending schools outside the immediate Wilmer-Hutchins area since then.
“This is very much a welcome addition to this proud and underserved community,” said Darren L. James, AIA, president and COO of KAI Texas. “We believe from our conversation with residents of the area that the new school will improve neighborhood spirit and reactivate Eagle Pride.”
KAI led the architectural and engineering efforts so that the vision could become reality.
The new two-story, 98,000-square-foot school facility will serve up to 810 students in grades pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. The floor plans for the two-story structure call for 40 classrooms, an auditorium, a library, a cafeteria and a gymnasium. The new school is on JJ Lemmon Ave.
As one of the few sites for public events in the area, the school will serve as a community center as well. Areas such as the gym and the kitchen will be designed to cater to outside groups wanting to meet there during non-school hours.
The building will comply with sustainability standards of the Texas CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) standards. Chief among those features are the planned installation of an HVAC system using geothermal wells reaching 150 feet into the earth. The wells are expected to lower energy costs about 20 percent.
Occupancy is set for Fall 2011.
