New Eco Directive Covers Broader Product Range - SGS Supports Companies with Implementation
The EuP Directive has been updated at the end of 2009 by a new directive that specifies ecological planning requirements for energy-related products, 2009/125/EC. This new Directive’s terms are expanded to cover a wider range of products.
Geneva, Switzerland, July 17, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The scope of the new Energy-related Products Directive broadens the reach of the EuP directive (http://www.ee.sgs.com/ecodesign-directive.htm), which was limited to energy-using products including televisions, microwave ovens, light fittings and washing machines. The new directive covers a broader range of products impacting upon energy consumption, now also including energy-saving products such as taps, shower heads and windows.
The European Commission definition specifies that the new directive is applicable to all products whose usage affects levels of energy consumption. This is the reason why both energy-using and energy-saving products are now included. Energy-saving products would, for example, include insulating windows that keep warmth inside, reducing the amount of energy required to heat homes.
In order for the many products now covered by the directive to bear CE-marking (http://www.ee.sgs.com/ce-marking.htm), a range of new ‘Implementing Measures’ covering each of these products will now need to be established and implemented.
Those implementing measures previously linked to the EuP directive are now subsumed under 2009/125/EC. Producers of consumer goods must now ensure that the Declaration of Conformity related to each of their CE-marked items refers to the 2009/125/EC Energy-related Products Directive.
Strategies for adapting to the new directive
While producers will recognize the importance of the Eco-directive as part of the environmental legislation, they may find it challenging to ensure that each of their products meets, prior to launch, the range of specific requirements detailed by the directive. Third party accredited organizations are available to support producers to meet conformity requirements by:
ensuring product compliance with proposed Directives and advising on compliance with proposed and future Directives
Providing verification of product compliance with implementation measures. This is given in the form of a technical construction file test report as well as CE-marking Declaration of Conformity
Providing information regarding timely and cost-effective compliance with related directives, for example the Low-Voltage Directive and EMC Directive
Streamlined implementation of Eco-directives can also be supported by:
an ecological profile analysis of your products, as specified by the Eco-directive
Product life-span analysis, including issues to be considered as part of product construction
Eco-planning and testing as required by the Eco-directives
