Web Start-up Launches to Measure National Sentiment, Empower Voters

Houston, TX, August 07, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Web start-up NatSent announced today that it has opened its revolutionary user driven news and discussion website to the public. NatSent.com enables individuals to directly involve themselves in America’s discussions by identifying, following, framing and influencing the issues that matter to them at no cost. NatSent’s goal is to empower individuals to learn about the issues and shape the direction and perspective of national debates.

“We all have an opinion,” said co-founder Shelby Joe. “But until NatSent, there have been very few avenues for us to express that opinion in a measurable and impactful way. NatSent enables all of us to become policymakers and business developers.”

The site is like a personalized digital newspaper where users are the editors, writers and readers. Through voting on and following issues, users decide which topics make the front page; they decide how those topics are framed and influence the direction of the debate. NatSent itself is editorially agnostic and does not modify or filter the user-generated content.

“Think about how important newspaper endorsements currently are,” said co-founder Patrick Redford. “Every candidate wants the endorsement because of the implied group support that comes with it. NatSent is the same way except that our users, not editors, decide who and what to support.”

NatSent’s founders created the site as a way for anyone to easily understand and influence business, political, and social issues of national importance, such as immigration reform and unemployment.

“We wanted to empower everyone—not just the rich and powerful—to say how they see the issues, how they want to improve their own lives,” said Shelby Joe. “In a strong democracy, it should be pretty difficult for politicians to ignore well-informed voters if NatSent makes it obvious what they want.”

By aggregating users’ article posts and votes, NatSent provides valuable insight into the national sentiment of America. For every topic on NatSent, the site is able to break down participating users’ sentiment by such information as state, age, gender, race and income. The site freely displays this data through customizable filters, including trends over a selected period of time.

NatSent highly values a user’s privacy. Although the site asks users to truthfully volunteer demographic information about themselves, it does not require that they provide their real names.

About NatSent

Former Rice University roommates Shelby Joe and Patrick Redford began to put together the idea for NatSent in 2009, when the financial crisis loomed large and the debate on health care reform was reaching a fever pitch. As recent entrants into a distressed workforce, unemployment and an uninsured future loomed over the two founders' heads. They wanted a better way to understand the world and a more efficient mechanism for making an impact. NatSent is the product of those uncertain times.
