No Grades, No Tests, No Problem: a Radical School Opens Its Doors This Fall

Imagine a school where students get to do whatever they want all day long. Imagine those students later excelling in life and at the nation’s best universities.

Davie, FL, August 08, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Sunset Sudbury School, a private school based on the 40-year-old Sudbury model of education (www.sudval.org) is currently accepting students. It is only the second school of its kind in Florida, and one of 24 schools in the United States. The model challenges families to re-think their own ideas about teaching and learning. Its philosophy is fundamentally different from what most people believe schooling could or should be, and the results indicate that the model works. About 80% of graduates go on to the college of their first choice and enter every possible kind of career.

Staff and parents trust in each child’s innate curiosity, motivation to learn, and ability to know what is best for him or her, while respecting others. The school community uses a system of justice that is student-led and empowering for all. Students have a vote in how the school is run, from determining how the budget is spent to deciding who gets hired and fired. At Sudbury schools, life is the curriculum.

Some may question whether students left to their own devices will learn what they need to, especially subjects like math and reading. “The truth is that’s the easy stuff,” states Dionne Ekendiz, one of the school’s founders. “Basic skills, even high-tech ones, are increasingly being farmed out. Our children will need skills like self-understanding, self-motivation, creative problem-solving, communication, and persuasion to compete in the future.”

So how will students learn without the traditional trappings of school? “The goal of Sunset Sudbury School is not to create great students, but to create independent thinkers that are so confident and secure in who they are, that they can do anything they want,” said Kathy Williams, another founder who will send her two boys to Sunset Sudbury in the fall. “They will develop who they are with no restrictions. Only they will decide what it is they need to learn. My sons will have the opportunity to become the best individuals they can be.”
