DirectRooms.com reveals that preparations are taking place for the annual Loy Krathong festival in Malaysia’s Penang.
Penang, Malaysia, August 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The festival will see a large number of people floating small rafts down the river or into the sea. The tradition is to honour and pay respect to the Goddess of water, “Phra Mae Khongkha.” Devotees see it as a way to apologize to the Goddess for the bad things and pollution that may have been added to the river during the past year.
Originating in Thailand the festival has become so popular that it now spreads to parts of Malaysia and Laos.

The name of the festival stands for “Loy” meaning to float and “Krathong” a raft. The vessels are traditionally made from banana leaves but may also be created in styrofoam. Recently, due to increased environmental concerns, rafts have also been made out of bread which biodegrades quicker than leaves and also acts as fish food.
People taking part in the festival will add strands of their own hair and cut fingernails to the Krathongs. By doing so they believe this acts as a symbol of letting go of the bad parts of themselves so they can start life afresh.
Each year Loy Krathong takes place on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, which this year will be on Sunday 3rd October 2010. The temple will be holding a food fair from 11am and releasing of the Krathongs will take place from 9pm at Gurney Drive.
