The Committee to Re-Elect Jennifer McGrath City Attorney of Huntington Beach announces the release of over 30 photographs of the 2010 Hurley US Open of Surfing final heat in Huntington Beach, California, between Brett Simpson and Michael “Jordy” Smith.
Huntington Beach, CA, August 13, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The 2010 Hurley US Open of Surfing took place July 31, through August 8, 2010, in Huntington Beach, California. The final heat of the US Open of Surfing Championship came down to Huntington Beach local Brett Simpson, 25, and South African surfer Michael “Jordy” Smith, 22.
Brett Simpson defeated Jordy Smith (13.97 to 8.33) to win the 2010 US Open of Surfing Championship. Last year, Mr. Simpson defeated two-time world champion Mick Fanning to win the 2009 US Open of Surfing.
Elected City official Jennifer McGrath was in attendance to support the US Open of Surfing. The field of contenders at the 2010 US Open of Surfing included many of the top surfers in the world. Brett Simpson battled past Nathaniel Curran, 26, (2008 US Open of Surfing Champion) in the quarterfinals (10.14 to 9.74), and nine time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater, 38, in the semifinals (13.37 to 13.33). Jordy Smith defeated Miguel Pupo, 18, of Brazil in the quarterfinals (17.66 to 16.10), and Australian Mick Fanning, 29, (2007 and 2009 ASP World Tour Surfing Champion) in the semifinals (13.00 to 12.80).

Huntington Beach, Surf City USA, is also home to the annual City of Huntington Beach Surfing Competition, Boardfest, AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament, Vans Triple Crown Skate Championships, Core Tour BMX and Skateboard, and other competitions.
Brett Simpson is a professional surfer from Huntington Beach, California, and recipient of the Orange County Surfer of the Year award in 2008 and 2009. Mr. Simpson is the winner of the 2009 and 2010 US Open of Surfing contest.
Michael “Jordy” Smith is a professional surfer from South Africa. Mr. Smith is a surfer in the World Championship Tour and winner of the 2010 Billabong J-Bay competition in South Africa. Mr. Smith is sponsored by O'Neill and is known for his surfing maneuvers such as "alley-oops" and "rodeo flips."
